Pie-Eyed, Sheffield, NZ
We love pie. Almost as much as these guys. And by pie we mean the savoury kind: meat, cheese, potato or veg wrapped in a flakey pastry.
Fortunately New Zealand takes pies seriously and sometimes the best pies are found in the most unlikely places. Take, for example, The Sheffield Pie Shop.
Located in a one horse whistle stop in the middle of the Canterbury Plains in the middle of the South Island, this self advertised “Best Pie Shop in NZ” shop probably wouldn’t have lured us in had it not been lunch time and had it not been for the two fellas sitting outside chomping down on pie. They certainly looked like they knew a thing or two about pies and wouldn’t lunch on anything but the finest. We pulled over.
Greeted by a long queue, the wafting aroma of hot pie, and a mouth watering assortment of pies, we set about the toughest decision of the day: paring down the pie choice. In the end we went for traditional (steak and cheese), locavore (venison), and experimental (Mexican- bean chili).
Everything was delicious, flakey crust, thick gravy, big meaty chunks of tender flavorful meat – we may really have found the best “Best Pie Shop in NZ” in NZ.
We’ll have to go back to try the dessert case.
As we left we snapped a picture of the shop. The two guys were just finishing up their lunch and as we took the picture they got up. For a minute we thought we might be the next course, then they laughed and they proudly patted their stomachs.
In response to The Daily Post’s weekly photo challenge: “Express Yourself.”
Does anywhere else in the world do pies like NZ? In the UK they seemed smaller, used onky shortcrust pastry and had odd fillings. Macaroni pie anyone?
We come for family, we stay for pie!
I want a bobble-head figurine of the guy in black. Wonderful photos—they made me happy on a different hemisphere’s overcast winter’s day!
Thanks, O. Fancy opening up a pie shop when we get back? It would be “tres Brooklyn”!
om noms. so tasty!
Indeed they were!
They look so good! So do the pies!
