Meet The Whirlers
Doublewhirler is a husband and wife currently living in New York City. Originally from New Zealand (him) and New England (her), New York brought us together, but a shared love of photography and getting the hell out of the city keeps the magic alive.
She’s a little bit iPhone, he’s a little bit camera obsessed.
Mrs DW was in-between cameras when she got her smart phone and hasn’t looked back. However, coming from a traditional print design and photo retouching background, she was reluctant to embrace the “easy shortcut” apps like Snapseed with its fancy schmancy filters, but was ultimately seduced.
Mr DW has always had a love of cameras and equipment; his interest spans from rediscovering the old to fully embracing the new—until he came up against the camera phone. He could stretch no further and that’s where Mrs DW and her trusty iPhone come in.
An iPhone v camera rivalry was born.

Hey Double Whirler – nice to connect your background with the IG photos I have enjoyed. I am a part-time Luddite myself. As in, I have always had the latest graphic design software, Mac, etc for my job, but have resisted having the internet at home. I was the last person I know to get an iPhone (and only b/c my FLIP PHONE died and there were no batteries to be be had in Boston!). That was about 4 months ago, and I have (obviously) become insanely addicted to the wonderful world of Instagram since…. It’s a love/not totally convinced relationship though.
Thanks for visiting, it’s great to connect outside IG too! We’ve been having a big debate about IG and whether it counts as social media or not and I think this proves that it is. But we’re also having the love/not convinced debate about IG too. It is so new and so addictive as you point out, but when the shine wears off? The Met has a show on manipulating photography broken in to two parts, before and after Photoshop. In the second part, “After Photoshop Manipulated Photography in the Digital Age”, they discuss the impact of social media and photo sharing. So for good or for bad, we’re watching art and culture change.
Innnnteresting. As a graphic designer (who actually went to art school – I only say that b/c 1million hipsters with laptops and free fonts make band posters for their friends and use those same 2 words to describe themselves), I have long been using PhotoShop. It’s my favorite manipulation program (well, aside from the occassional mind game…) Our final Pshop class was so cool – everyone presented a project they’d done, and the range was amazing. (I made a traditional Greek Icon (with real wood and applied gold leaf) in which I put Madonna the pop star’s face in place of the traditional Virgin Mary’s.)
What I personally love about IG – and why I think I will stay on it for all of eternity – is that it’s so cool to see thing from other parts of the world and other perspectives. And I just use my phone and sometimes make some tweaks with Camera+ or snapseed – nothing like the stuff I could do in P-shop (if I did that, I would have no time for ANYTHING! my cat would starve!)
I met with an urban landscaper today who I found through IG (or he found me first) – he wasn’t pedaling his wares just commenting on photos and it wasn’t until I saw via The Facebook that another friend had used his services, and then I contacted him. Had a great meeting with him – who knows if it will result in me hiring him to landscape my (small) roof deck or not (will all come down to his plans and cost) – but regardless, it was a nice connection that never would have happened otherwise.
So…no definitives on the love/not totally convinced thing, but maybe since it’s V-day, I am feeling the LOVE.
And I’ve enjoyed my exchanges with you guys (I did not know until I read your home page here yesterday that you are 2 people – I assumed I was “talking” to a woman originally from Massachusetts – but now it’s all a mystery – which is kind of cool). Lastly, I love seeing photos of cats. And one of the guys I follow (“fat jew”) posts things that make me laugh at least once/week.

Happy Valentine’s Day to you too! Thanks for such a thoughtful comment! Please allow me to introduce myself, I’m Eliza, originally from Massachusetts and I alone am the Instagram user. My major was Art History, but my work background is in graphic design/print production- dating back to when it was called “desktop publishing”. Quark/InDesign/Illustrator/Photoshop etc have paid many a bill for me and picking up new media isn’t too troublesome. Hubby is the luddite who loves film (and digital) cameras and develops and prints his own negatives.
Just before moving back to the States a dog “ate” my beloved camera. While I hemmed and hawed about replacing it, I got an iPhone. Then I added on Instagram. Now I’ve made it a project to only shoot with my phone while Hubby only shoots with his many cameras (he has a Blackberry anyway).
What has me hooked on IG is exactly what you love, the ability to delve into other worlds and perspectives; I follow a graphic designer in Sydney (@willtypefordondraper) who loves retro signage and favors the old 70s look with her photos. When I follow her feed I feel like I’m in a sunny summer day in a kinder, gentler time. Then there’s an older Polish guy in Krakow ( @miroslawkrok – if it is his photo- perhaps he’s a 13 yr old girl- ah, the mystery) who has beautiful horses and takes pictures of his Polish life – again I’m transported to a snowy slavic world. Then, most unexpected of all, I find following my brother in Scotland, keeps me much more up to date than FB or Skype. Didn’t see that coming!
I never expected this aspect of IG, but it is the one I enjoy the most! Love your cat BTW.

I also follow #willtypefordondraper and love her vintage signs. I will have to check our the 13 – 89 year old in Poland later tonight. And thanks for saying you love my cat – I LOVE to hear that – never gets old. I love her to infinity! I love your cat too – and so cool that you rescued him from the streets of Greece (it’s a hard knock life…) OK, must go – off to meet a friend to have some red drinks to celebrate the day. Hello Doublewhirler, Thank you for discovering my blog and the likes on some of my recent posts. I have mixed feelings about social media, but I have to admit that the reach of a blog (and other equivalent uses of electronic media) is astounding. I haven’t discovered Instagram yet – in fact, we are managing to travel without a smartphone. Ah the next step of social media, blogging on the go. We have yet to dip our toe into this pool. Our devices are a beloved laptop loaded up with Photoshop and CS suite (too much, too heavy) and an iPhone (too small for the photo heavy posts). The iPad seems just right! Give Instagram a whirl, you might just find it addictive— although we tend to use it in waves. You’re brave for being able to separate from your smart phone, that’s definitely our “Precious”!

Actually I had to give the smartphone back when I lost a job last year. Now we just use a basic cell phone. It goes “ring, ring”, and I pick it and say “hello”. Who’d have though that Maxwell Smart’s shoe phone would become a reality 🙂 Blogging on the go is a challenge. Apart from other struggles, I have trouble getting the photos to insert where I want them. I’ll be happy to get back to the laptop I think………… BTW, I noticed you had been featured in Feshly Pressed. Ah, there’s fodder for another post. The two islands have nothing in common (except widespread use of English) so which ever one you’re on, you miss the other one. In the middle of the buzz and diversity of NYC, you miss being out in nature, climbing mountains and the clear blue water lapping up against a Roman ruin. If only we could take the best of both islands…

I came accross your blog randomly — it’s a rainy Sunday morning here in Brisbane (Australia), and I’m spending the time looking at blogs. So happy I chose yours to discover. I understand the iPhone v camera thing — I use my iPhone most days, because I usually don’t have my camera with me. That happens on more planned outings. I never thought a phone could take such amazing clear photos. But there you have it — it does. I’m looking forward to seeing your NYC life (just a tad jealous, having visited there a few times — lived in the States for a decade a while back). 🙂
